short vs longer bypass.....

At my support group mtg this past wk the dietician stated that my hospital does the "shortest bypass that we know of".
Not timewise but length of intestine bypassed.
Do any post-ops out there know how this would affect the patient if at all compared to longer bypasses?

Thanks,
Alice

She is referring to a Proximal vs a Distal. Most doctors do the Proximal which can  be  anywhere from 50 -100 centimeters. Distal is  usually 125 and over. With distal there is more maintenance required in supplementing and most people don't adhere to the guidelines is one reason the doctors in my area do not do distal.

If after a certain time is are legimate reasons for a revision of the surgery some will do a distal. In extreme cases the can do a DS also.

Sorry if I'm rambling now....hope this answered your question.

Thank you. I think what he meant was the shortest proximal. Probably less problems with absorption.
